Junior Sailors see America’s Cup at the America’s Cup Village

November 10, 2011

Last night at the Event Village, junior sailors from around San Diego were treated to a “Sneak Peek” preview of the America’s Cup races that will start on Saturday with the Port Cities Challenge.  Cup Spokesman, Tom Ehman gave two talks to standing-room-only crowds full of kids and adults too.  He was joined on stage by former America’s Cup skipper for France Bruno Trouble, current Team Artemis skipper Terry Hutchinson, and Ian Burns, technical team coordinator for ORACLE Racing.  Later Iain Murray, head of the America’s Cup Race Management joined the discussion.

Over 150 kids from junior sailing programs all over San Diego attended the talks as well as all the local high school sailing teams from over 8 different high schools. San Diego junior sailing programs have a long tradition of producing National, World and Olympic Champions and many of the top junior sailors in the world sail out of San Diego.  In the crowd last night were current top junior sailors such as Nevin Snow, who has won his division at the last three high school nationals for Cathedral Catholic and won the 2010 Junior High School Single-handed National Championships;  Andrew Cates and Zack Downing, current 29er European Champions; Marly Isler, US Olympic Development team member; Paris Henken, current 29er US Youth Champion.
